Peter Glockner’s Story
As a “younger” member of the hearing loss club, I was embarrassed about adding hearing aids to my recently started list of “old guy implements” like reading glasses. Being a professional procrastinator for most of my adult life, I was able to push my hearing loss issues to the back burner for a couple of years until it became overly evident
I could not have asked for a more caring, knowledgeable, professional and friendly audiologist if I tried. From the onset of my first appointment, Joyce made me feel very comfortable about the whole process and she explained that we were not going to find a solution for me that day and possibly not for the next few months, but that we would definitely find the “right” solution for my hearing needs.
Being a performing musician with monthly gigs had me very nervous about how hearing aids would affect my ability to play and hear my performances and Joyce was very aware of this concern. In the end I had trialed 4 different brands of hearing aids over the course of a couple of months until we were able to find the “sound” I was hoping for. Joyce was not only very patient throughout the entire process, she encouraged me to come into the office as often as I deemed necessary for adjustments to the hearing aids to make them work for me. She also did not talk about the prices of the various brands/models I was trying so I would specifically focus on the quality of the sound without letting the price get in the way of my evaluation. At one point I was pretty sure that she was seeing me more than any of her other patients combined but never once did she make me feel like I was imposing on her generosity of time. In fact, since I have settled on my brand and sound settings, Joyce has called me every few months to ask how everything is sounding and insists that I come in for a quick check-up/adjustment if I so much as mention any issue with the sound.
To say that hearing aids have positively impacted my life in every way would be a gross understatement and to say that my experience with Dr. Chen at Okanagan Hearing Center has been highly rewarding would be an even greater understatement. If you or anyone you love are having reservations regarding meeting with an audiologist about hearing aids for the first time, I can only say this, “Call Dr. Joyce Chen and make an appointment, today!”
Thank you Joyce for bringing back communication to my world, it was long overdue and, with the stealthy new designs, not even embarrassing for me because no one knows I’m wearing them!

Ken Carr’s Story
Because I have been a hearing aid user for 16 years, I know what I would like to accomplish with the help of a hearing aid provider. It became obvious to me a couple of years ago that I needed to find a different provider who had my interests in mind. I found through a reliable source that I should contact Doctor Joyce Chen of Okanagan Hearing Centre in Kelowna, B.C.
Joyce Chen is a Doctor of Audiology, with knowledge and experience in her profession, and with lots of patience. Doctor Chen wants to do whatever she can to make you happy and satisfied with your hearing experiences. Every hearing aid client has special hearing deficiencies to be identified first, and then through proper applications, to be fitted with your specific, adjusted hearing aids.
You can have well-adjusted hearing aids, with clearer and more natural sound. As a golfer, I can now participate and communicate better with my golf partners, both on the course and our social time after the game. This holds true for all other group communication I am involved in.
I wear my hearing aids from 6 AM in the morning to 11 PM at night. With the help of hearing aid accessories I can function very well in most situations I’m involved in during the day. I use my hearing aids alone during my early morning at home. Then I add the use of the phone clip accessory during the day for hands-free answering of my cell phone, identifying texts and voicemails coming in. There is also a microphone accessory which can be clipped onto another person’s clothing and you can hear them speaking through your hearing aids. During the day or in the evening while watching television, I can use my TV streamer accessory. All of these accessories communicate the sound directly into my hearing aids, which are adjusted for my hearing deficiencies. This is accomplished through Bluetooth technology.
A bit of experienced information for people who think hearing aids don’t help: it can be frustrating when first getting used to hearing aids but working with a provider who is patient, knowledgeable, and experienced makes all the difference to a new hearing aid client. Veteran hearing aid clients can also work with a provider to get the most out of using accessories and technology available. Well-adjusted hearing aids make a difference to your quality of life.
At the end of the day, you can’t go wrong with your visit to see Doctor Joyce Chen in Kelowna. Joyce enjoys her work, enjoys helping people, and is a genuine person who is not centered on her personal welfare.

Dr. Stan Szombathy’s Story
Dear Dr. Chen,
I am writing to express my sincere appreciation for your help with my hearing problem. Since your diagnostic assessment, and provision of hearing aids to me, my life has literally changed! I didn’t realize how much I was missing, and how fatiguing it was becoming to have to “lip-read” in order to get by on a daily basis. Since the aids, I feel like something precious has been given back to me!
Hearing loss is poorly understood by most people – myself included – and I was misinformed about what hearing aids could do for me. You demystified this for me through your thorough assessment and guided me to the most effective aids for my problem. Your product knowledge and expertise in this area are impressive, but even more impressive is your kind and understanding approach to your patient’s needs. In my case, this included a lot of explanation and discussion, which has been greatly reassuring. The frequent follow-up appointments to make sure that my hearing aids are meeting my needs, also reflect your care and concern.
I couldn’t be happier with my hearing aids. They are almost invisible, the sound is fantastic and the “connectivity” through their Bluetooth capabilities have allowed me to link them to my phone, a remote microphone and even my television and stereo! I never would’ve guessed that they are so technologically advanced.
I simply cannot thank you enough! I hope that others with hearing problems will find you, as I know that their lives will change for the better, too.

Cam Doyle’s Story
Before I had hearing aids, life was pretty miserable as I could not follow conversations going on in a group setting or even understand my husband at home. I would often misinterpret what was being said. It was very difficult joining in a conversation.
Dr. Chen has fitted me twice with hearing aids and has saved my life. Every five years or so, technology changes and hearing aids improve…
I just recently purchased new hearing aids and much to my surprise they are way better than my previous ones. Everything is so much clearer or more natural. For the first time, I can hear the public address system at the golf course from 400 yards away as if I was just a short distance away. My friends at the golf course also remark on how much better I can hear them and can join in their conversations. I wear them every day. I put them on first thing in the morning and take them off before I go to bed. I forget I have them on they feel so natural. When you are fitted with hearing aids be sure you wear them daily and if they don’t feel right, go back and get them adjusted.
If you are considering getting hearing aids I would recommend Dr. Joyce Chen at the Okanagan Hearing Centre as she is very well trained and qualified for the job. As she is a Doctor of Audiology, she knows what she is doing. I would highly recommend Okanagan Hearing Centre. I have experienced other clinics and you are better off with Joyce Chen.

Elayne Oishi’s Story
When my Mom finally accepted that she needed help with the hearing loss that the family knew she had, I took her to the Okanagan Hearing Centre for her assessment test with Dr. Chen. Although Mom was uneasy, Dr. Chen made her feel comfortable and cared for immediately. Mom’s hearing loss was considerable and Dr. Chen explained the results well while reassuring us that she would work with us to get the best quality of aids that we could buy within our budget.
When we came back to choose the hearing aids, Dr. Chen suggested a brand and model for us that she thought would be best for Mom’s ears as well as easy to use with Mom’s crippled arthritic hands. We liked the price and so the choice was easy for Mom. In fact, the choice was so perfect that Mom went home with her new hearing aids that day and wore them for nearly 12 hours because they were so comfortable. In the days to follow, she wore them for at least 14 hours each day and I was amazed at her easy transition into her new life in the hearing world! We returned a few days later only for a slight ‘tweak’ of the sound levels and have been very pleased with the results!
Through it all, Dr. Chen was always professionally efficient, cheerful, kind, and compassionate. You can certainly tell that she has a heart for her chosen career!
What a real joy to have found this gem of an audiologist to help my Mom. My Mom has wondered why she waited so long to take this step forward. She is forever grateful to Dr. Chen for returning her to the hearing world again.
